Start Core Training

What we do in Woodwork sessions

Within the woodwork department, members begin their experience with a 'Taster' session where they explore different techniques using hand tools; practicing carving, laminating and joining.

Members then progress to an Entry Level qualification where they are inducted in the safe use of our 'state of the art' wood machine shop, and members start to develop their own ideas of design and furniture making.

Members then have the opportunity to take a Level 1 qualification, where they can hone their skills and further develop their own style.

What we do in Therapeutic group sessions

Start in Salford have run various therapeutic groups in the past including Laughter Workshops and Smoking Cessation classes.

We currently hold Tai Chi sessions within our Gallery space, this helps with relaxation and balance which is very popular amongst our members.

What we do in Textiles sessions

Within the textiles sessions members work with an experienced Textile artist. These sessions offer the members a chance to develop their skills through felt making and silk painting as well as embroidery.

Start members don’t have to have any experience of working in this field and the art work produced is always of a very high standard.

What we do in Photography sessions

At Start in Salford we run sessions in both Digital and Traditional Black and White photography. There’s a lot on offer for the budding photographer and enthusiast, you don’t need any prior knowledge to take part.

  • Learn all about how the camera works and how to make it work for you.
  • Create fantastic images on the computer using Adobe Photoshop.
  • Discover the art of black and white photography, how to process film and print in the darkroom.
  • Shoot portraits or still-life in the studio using professional lighting.
  • Go on trips to local beauty spots to shoot landscape and nature shots.
  • Learn to work as part of a team producing saleable photographic goods in our Income Generation groups.
  • Gain an OCNW Level 1 certificate in either digital or traditional photography.
  • Make new friends and gain invaluable skills at Start in Salford Arts Project.

What we do in Multi-media sessions

The multi-media groups at Start include:

  • Video production
  • Web development
  • Computer studies

What we do in Ceramics sessions

When members first start ceramics they begin with a 'Taster' session, where they can experiment with and explore different techniques, from rolling clay, to looking at texture and pattern, to hand and slab building. Coiling and glazing techniques are also looked at. A variety of outcomes are achieved from tiles to vessels.

What we do in Horticulture sessions

The members of the Garden Project at Start have planned, designed and begun to create a ‘Gallery Garden’ at Start. This all began back in 2004 with ideas to smarten up the land adjacent to the building; it was originally the cemetery for the Wesleyan church back in the 19th century. Some of the old tombstones have been respectively laid near the entrance to the garden, a reminder of the legacy of this amazing building.

Recyle fabric to make a folksy wall hanging

From a heap of unpromising looking old clothing and material remnants, the textile taster group created striking looking folksy hangings.

An old wire hanger was turned into a metal hoop. People then tore strips of material (about 15cm by 2) and knotted them onto the hoop, combining a mix of colours and materials. The tearing part was fun and satisfying! After a tea break we sewed little hearts out of the same materials and filled them with lavender-infused stuffing, finishing off to create an unusual, attractive and scented hanging for the wall, window or even front door.

If you’d like to transform a piece of worn out clothing into a beautiful folksy hanging, you can download illustrated step-by-step instructions here.

What we do in Visual arts sessions

In Visual Arts we offer our members the opportunity to explore and experiment with different media. Members can try out their skills in painting, drawing and printmaking – skills they might not have used for some time.

Through the Rolling programme members also have the chance to work with practicing artists whose specialisms differ from those of the core team, providing more choice as well as supporting local artists.
