Start the journey...
If you or someone you know would like to join Start in Salford see the Step by step guide or call us on 0161 351 6000.

We all struggle with our feelings sometimes, no matter how old we are. For young people facing daily pressures, its all too easy to lose your way in life. The first step for getting back on track is finding a way to express yourself that is positive and productive, moving you forward with hope and confidence.
Start Youth Arts helps people aged 12 to 25 explore creative activities, learn new skills, build friendships, gain qualifications and have fun at the same time.
Start Youth Arts is a programme for young people who are socially excluded or who may be at risk of being excluded in some way. Our projects are designed to meet specific interests and are run in partnership with other organisations. Over ten weeks, our weekly creative sessions help the group to explore their interests and to identify and access options that will help them achieve their goals in education, training, employment or community life.
For every young person, we have the same aims. We want to:
• build confidence and self-belief
• encourage ambition and goals
• improve communication and expression
• teach life skills and workplace skills
• give a wider range of future choices
If you think a Start Youth Arts project will help, then we’d love to hear from you. If you already have a support worker they can fill in a referral form or you can call Francine Hayfron for a chat on 0161 351 6000 or email: francine.hayfron@startinsalford.org.uk

Grumpy & Start DO ART!
In July 2011 Grumpy, the Play Resource centre and Start in Salford were delighted to receive funding from the Salford City Council's Short Break Care For Disabled Children Fund, to provide weekly fun and free, arts and craft sessions for children with additional needs and disabilities in Salford, aged 5 – 18 years and their siblings until March 2012.
At Grumpy and Start DO ART! sessions children are able to experience a broad range of different arts and craft activities each week, working towards a themed exhibition event that will take place at Start In Salford's 'Peoples Gallery'.
Start Youth Arts support Roger Waters at The M.E.N. Arena
In April 2011 Start in Salford was approached by a close friend and musical collaborator of Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, to assist with coordinating a children’s choir for his sell out shows of "The Wall" at the M.E.N. Manchester on 20 and 21 May and 28 June 2011.
The young people who come from schools and community groups across the City of Salford, such as The Albion High School and Walkden High School, were selected to perform the iconic track “Another Brick in the Wall” alongside Roger Waters on stage.

We are extremely proud of one of the members of our Youth Arts Inclusion Project, Richard Harper who also volunteered in the woodwork department. Richard has been kind enough to write about his journey so far...
"A little bit about me; I’m 17 years old. I go to YMCA training in Salford on the e2e course where I do literacy & numeracy and learn to work in a team. I have level 1 in numeracy.
Work placement with Ben at Start in Salford; in the woodwork department, I made:
• Planters

• Help make a yurt (a small Russian house)
'Hoodies are Goodies' – images that challenge stereotypes
The Youth Arts Inclusion Project has been working on a ‘Hoodies are Goodies’ project which involved a group of young people using photography to challenge their stereotype. The group has been successful in obtaining funding from Youth Bank, with the money being used to project the image they produce on a billboard poster campaign throughout Salford. The group are now planning the launch event… so watch this space.
Art projects with young people of Salford
Our Youth Arts Inclusion project is aimed at 13-19 year old Salford city residents, who have mild to moderate mental health issues, are at risk of developing these issues, are NEET (Not in Education Employment or Training), have substance misuse issues and/or learning difficulties.
Using art in its broadest form, we work with these young people to boost their confidence and self esteem, work on co-ordination and dexterity skills. We can also teach practical and structured art techniques.
