Sydney’s work is special because, being in his eighties, there could be no better example of the fact that you’re never too old to learn and master a new talent. He is therefore the embodiment of Starts Creative Start 50 plus scheme, the project that encourages over 50s across Salford to get involved in creative activities.
Syd really is a skilled painter. Far more than just a gifted amateur, his work shows real mastery of the medium and the developing nature of an emerging talent. He deserves to be more widely recognised.
Teacher and Creative Start 50 plus co-ordinator Danny Morrell said “Syds work is distinctive. His seniority has made him disregard contemporary art and return for inspiration to the old masters. But this is not a copying exercise. Syd recognises Turners use of light, the Dutch masters interpretations of the sea, and he combines these with his own sense of place, to produce faithful, knowing, modern landscapes. Inherently British and with just a touch of dewy romanticism, his compositions are easy on the eye, but the idyll is never mawkish.”
