Recycle fabrics to make a folksy wall hanging
From a heap of unpromising looking old clothing and material remnants, the textile taster group created striking looking folksy hangings.
An old wire hanger was turned into a metal hoop. People then tore strips of material (about 15cm by 2) and knotted them onto the hoop, combining a mix of colours and materials. The tearing part was fun and satisfying! After a tea break we sewed little hearts out of the same materials and filled them with lavender-infused stuffing, finishing off to create an unusual, attractive and scented hanging for the wall, window or even front door.
If you’d like to transform a piece of worn out clothing into a beautiful folksy hanging, you can download illustrated step-by-step instructions here.

Bernadette receives her award
We announced a few weeks ago that our Chief Executive, Bernadette Conlon, had been awarded the Mayor's Citizen Award for Salford. As an award that celebrates outstanding contributions made to the city of Salford and its people, we were thrilled that Bernie was recognised publicly for all her good work, and are pleased to be able to give you an update on the special day.
She attended the Mayor's Parlour to accept the award, along with the other winner (Jenny Thomas from Monton), and to start the proceedings.
Insight into our group sessions
This is the Creative Start 50+ group at Ranulph Court hard at work. We have had great attendances at a number of venues and this is just one that we wanted to show off.
These groups are a great way of getting people together, sharing an enjoyment of art, as well as a good chat! It doesn't matter what the ability, only enthusiasm is required.
Check the gallery images for the artwork created here, and at other groups, and see how fantastic it is.
Lowry's Market Appeal
We had some fantastic results from the Christmas markets this year. Sales on the week exceeded £1500 and we also gained £500 of post market orders.
All the items on the stall went down brilliantly with the public, but the biggest success this year were the ceramic department's 'Lowry Figures' which sold out and produced another 20 orders, ensuring a busy Christmas period for all involved!
Other news: Start Creative took items to councils and public buildings and sold £700 of stock.
Bernie's Award
Congratulations to Bernadette Conlon, our Chief Exec, who has been given the Mayor's Citizen Award for Salford. She has won under the adult category for December and will be presented with her award next Friday (22nd January) at the Mayor's Parlour in Manchester.
It is an award that celebrates outstanding contributions made to the city of Salford and its people. So well done Bernie, it is an award you so richly deserve. Enjoy your fantastic day next Friday.
Dancing in a Winter Wonderland
Our Winter Wonderland Christmas party finally arrived and everyone partied hard and enjoyed the festivities. Everything went according to plan (as we knew they would!) and the event was a big success. Plenty of eating and drinking, and the bands ensured that we were able to burn it all off again with lots of dancing and carol singing.
The whole thing looked amazing, with the huge marquee in the car park keeping out the cold, and the dozens of lanterns in the new garden looked spectacular.
Product photography service
At Start we are always open to new opportunities. Something that has come to our attention are the fantastic product shots from the Income Generation group.
We are therefore looking into the prospect of offering such product shots to artists who want a professional image for their product.
As of yet we don't have any specific details as the idea is in its preliminary stage. For further information contact Jenni (photography) and watch this space for more information.
Greater Manchester Arts and Health Project update
The Greater Manchester Arts and Health Project has been a huge success in the districts of Rochdale, Trafford, Stockport and Oldham. Our sessional Artists along with our member artists have delivered sessions in Enamelling, making artists books, Calligraphy, Collage and Photography. These are all highly technical art forms and the results that were achieved looked amazing.
We thank all those who attended and helped make the sessions a success.
Wardley's wonderful exhibition
Congratulations to the Wardley group who ran an exhibition in Swinton library during September. Part of being an artist is having the opportunity to showcase your artwork, so we were delighted that their hard work and talent was available for the public to see. There were lots of paintings on display, from landscapes to portraits...and not to mention a few famous faces (see picture).
The work on display was of an excellent standard, we only wish we could add more pictures for you to see!
