Remembering Edith - Garden opening

On Thursday 10th June our Start garden was officially renamed 'Edith's Garden.'

It is a tribute to Edith who previously worked here at Start and was a treasured friend and colleague to all who knew her. The afternoon was complete with music, food and drinks and was very much a day of celebration, the focus of which being the official naming of the garden.

Creative Master Classes at Start in Salford

Start offers a range of Creative Masterclasses for the general public. We invite anyone to come along and try something new and at the same time support Start in Salford's vision for a brighter future in the heart of the community.

Currently we have Life Drawing sessions every Tuesday evening 5.30pm – 7.30pm and cost just £4.50 per session. The classes are non-tutored and are aimed at individuals interested in drawing the figure. Easels and boards are provided, please bring paper, pencils etc. Both Male & Female models used. All are welcome!

We are launching a master class for anyone who is interested in Early Photographic Print Processes. The class will involve working with 19th Century photographic printing techniques: Van Dyke Brown, Cyanotypes and Gum Printing using digital negatives. A basic knowledge of Photoshop is desirable. The cost of the course will be £105 for 6 two and half hour sessions. The classes will be on a Tuesday evening 5.30-8.00pm at Start in Salford.

We are also running Start in Salford Open Pottery Class on Mondays 10.30am – 3.00pm (with a half hour for lunch) costing £16.50 (a material cost will also apply). Want to try pottery? Already have skills but need working space? Studying at college/university but need more workshop time? Or do you just want to practice a craft in a relaxed & social environment. In our fully equipped ceramic workshop you can pursue any of these options. You may join our rolling sessions at any time, they can be booked individually or as a block but places must be booked in advance.

In addition, through Salford Family, Adult and Community learning we are offering Numeracy and Literacy classes, which are also open to the wider community. For more details please contact us on 0161 351 6000.

Bernadette receives her award

We announced a few weeks ago that our Chief Executive, Bernadette Conlon, had been awarded the Mayor's Citizen Award for Salford. As an award that celebrates outstanding contributions made to the city of Salford and its people, we were thrilled that Bernie was recognised publicly for all her good work, and are pleased to be able to give you an update on the special day.

She attended the Mayor's Parlour to accept the award, along with the other winner (Jenny Thomas from Monton), and to start the proceedings.

Lowry's Market Appeal

We had some fantastic results from the Christmas markets this year. Sales on the week exceeded £1500 and we also gained £500 of post market orders.
All the items on the stall went down brilliantly with the public, but the biggest success this year were the ceramic department's 'Lowry Figures' which sold out and produced another 20 orders, ensuring a busy Christmas period for all involved!

Other news: Start Creative took items to councils and public buildings and sold £700 of stock.

Bernie's Award

Congratulations to Bernadette Conlon, our Chief Exec, who has been given the Mayor's Citizen Award for Salford. She has won under the adult category for December and will be presented with her award next Friday (22nd January) at the Mayor's Parlour in Manchester.
It is an award that celebrates outstanding contributions made to the city of Salford and its people. So well done Bernie, it is an award you so richly deserve. Enjoy your fantastic day next Friday.

Dancing in a Winter Wonderland

Our Winter Wonderland Christmas party finally arrived and everyone partied hard and enjoyed the festivities. Everything went according to plan (as we knew they would!) and the event was a big success. Plenty of eating and drinking, and the bands ensured that we were able to burn it all off again with lots of dancing and carol singing.
The whole thing looked amazing, with the huge marquee in the car park keeping out the cold, and the dozens of lanterns in the new garden looked spectacular.
