Woodwork news and reviews

A Welsh Yurt this Time

The Start Creative Team, have done it again, another Yurt. This time for a private meditation space, on the north coast of the Llyn Peninsula, North Wales.

Ordsall Hall Picnic Bench Commission

The woodwork team have been super busy in the last three months manufacturing a series of bespoke English oak benches for the Re-opening of Salford’s famous 'Ordsall Hall'.

The workshop has been stacked to the rafters with large chunks of oak which we had specially felled and seasoned in Cheshire specifically for this order. It was part of the design brief to use local timber, which obviously fits perfectly with Start Creative's ethos.

Youth Arts - Green Woodworking & Creative and Media

Start's youth arts programme is currently running two projects for young people aged between 12 to 25 years old. These are the 'Green Woodworking' and 'Creative and Media' projects. The projects take place either on site at Brunswick House or on outreach at local schools, youth and community centres.

A sign for Edith

We want to say a big thank you to Ian Saville for creating the wonderful new sign for Edith's Garden. Ian is the woodwork tutor here at Start and has crafted a beautiful piece of work fittingly in Edith's name. The sign takes pride of place in the newly named garden so go and take a look.

Start Yurt On Hire

Start Creative
are on the road again and are representing 'Start' at a Manchester City Council event in Wythenshawe Park Manchester on Saturday 5th June.

The council booked one of our Urban Yurts for use as a story telling tent for their mini festival. Looks as though the summer is beginning and the Yurts are on the move again!

If you have an event or simply want to hire a space for a weekend then contact Ben Thomas on 0161 3516000 or ben.thomas@startinsalford.org.uk for a truly unique and magical space. Urban Yurts

Start Creative's Yurt commissions

Congratulations to Start Creative who have gained some fantastic commissions for their Yurt structures.

The team travelled to Grisedale National Forrest in the Lake District to install their latest Yurt. They were commissioned to build the Yurt, which is complete with insulation, log burning stove and solid front door, and will be available for bookings throughout the year for a unique, yet luxurious, camping experience.

They were also commissioned to produce Yurt style furniture to go inside.

Start member Richard Harper's story so far...

We are extremely proud of one of the members of our Youth Arts Inclusion Project, Richard Harper who also volunteered in the woodwork department. Richard has been kind enough to write about his journey so far...

"A little bit about me; I’m 17 years old. I go to YMCA training in Salford on the e2e course where I do literacy & numeracy and learn to work in a team. I have level 1 in numeracy.

Work placement with Ben at Start in Salford; in the woodwork department, I made:

• Planters
• Bird houses
• Help make a yurt (a small Russian house)

Start in Salford visits 'Woodfest' in North Wales

Start in Salford attended the 2008 Woodfest event in June, where we showed off our yurt as a gallery space for the ‘Start Creative’ products. Sales were extremely good, but what really made the weekend a success, was achieving a commission to produce another Yurt!
