Heart of Salford Award Success
The Heart of Salford Awards took place yesterday, Thursday 3rd June 2010 and Start in Salford were extremely proud to be nominated for the Organisation of the Year Award by volunteer Sian Roberts.
Our Arts on Prescription volunteer Constance Fearne won the 'Personal Achievement' Award for all that she has overcome and achieved whilst working as a volunteer at Start in Salford.
Diversity and Confusion Exhibition @ Start in Salford
'Diversity and Confusion' is the new exhibition being held in Start in Salford's People's Gallery featuring work created by volunteer Artsist in Residence Magdalena Furman.
Magdalena is a sculptor who has been able to develop her passion and skills further during the 18 months she has been volunteering at Start in Salford's ceramic studio, she has been helping out during classes as well as working as a volunteer Artist in Residence on her own work.
Phil Hamer Awarded Volunteer of The Year
We are extremely proud of our member volunteer Phil Hamer who won the Volunteer of the Year Award for his work with Mind. Phil currently volunteers for us as a photographer and is very highly regarded by all of us at Start.

Celebrate Volunteering Event
Strawberries and cream were the dish of the day at our latest Volunteer Celebration on the 4th June 2009. Well done to Sue Williams, Audrey Edwards, Anne Bird, Nikki Harrison, Richard Bebro, Tim Gausden and Kath Fitton who all achieved over 100hrs volunteering @ Start. Also a big thank you to all volunteers who attended the event in the People’s Gallery. As usual the event was enjoyed by all.
Congratulations to volunteer Phil Vanderkamp!
Congratulations to volunteer Phil Vandercamp who has moved on from volunteering alongside John Ball at Start to becoming self employed. Phil has already secured his first contract with Salford City Council- well done and congratulations!!!!!
Orange RockCorps comes to Start in Salford!
Orange and RockCorps have come together to help young people give something back to their community. Young people join up and give four hours of their time to a community project in their area, and in return, individuals get a ticket to an exclusive gig with performances from big name artists. This year sees Lady Gaga, N-Dubz and The Enemy performing for the RockCorps volunteers at The Apollo in Manchester on the 13th July.
Start member Richard Harper's story so far...
We are extremely proud of one of the members of our Youth Arts Inclusion Project, Richard Harper who also volunteered in the woodwork department. Richard has been kind enough to write about his journey so far...
"A little bit about me; I’m 17 years old. I go to YMCA training in Salford on the e2e course where I do literacy & numeracy and learn to work in a team. I have level 1 in numeracy.
Work placement with Ben at Start in Salford; in the woodwork department, I made:
• Planters
• Bird houses
• Help make a yurt (a small Russian house)
