Start Youth Arts news and reviews
Start member Richard Harper's story so far...
We are extremely proud of one of the members of our Youth Arts Inclusion Project, Richard Harper who also volunteered in the woodwork department. Richard has been kind enough to write about his journey so far...
"A little bit about me; I’m 17 years old. I go to YMCA training in Salford on the e2e course where I do literacy & numeracy and learn to work in a team. I have level 1 in numeracy.
Work placement with Ben at Start in Salford; in the woodwork department, I made:
• Planters
• Bird houses
• Help make a yurt (a small Russian house)
'Hoodies are Goodies' – images that challenge stereotypes
The Youth Arts Inclusion Project has been working on a ‘Hoodies are Goodies’ project which involved a group of young people using photography to challenge their stereotype. The group has been successful in obtaining funding from Youth Bank, with the money being used to project the image they produce on a billboard poster campaign throughout Salford. The group are now planning the launch event… so watch this space.
Art projects with young people of Salford
Our Youth Arts Inclusion project is aimed at 13-19 year old Salford city residents, who have mild to moderate mental health issues, are at risk of developing these issues, are NEET (Not in Education Employment or Training), have substance misuse issues and/or learning difficulties.
Using art in its broadest form, we work with these young people to boost their confidence and self esteem, work on co-ordination and dexterity skills. We can also teach practical and structured art techniques.
